Austrian political leaders are expressing shock over the death of a doctor who had closed her practice after she reported receiving death threats from opponents of COVID-19 restrictions and vaccines. Austrian media reported that the general practitioner was found dead at her practice office in a rural area of northern Austria on Friday. The Austria Press Agency says prosecutors in Wels confirmed a suicide and said notes were found but the contents weren't divulged. The doctor announced a month ago that she was closing the practice temporarily after more than seven months of receiving death threats. She later said she was closing it permanently.

Iraqi security forces have clashed with demonstrators in the heavily fortified Green Zone that houses official buildings. Using ropes, the protesters tore down cement walls leading to the heavily fortified district. Security forces responded by hurling gas canisters and using sound bombs. The protesters are followers of influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr who called for the demonstrations against the formation of the next government by Iran-backed political groups. Al-Sadr’s party exited government formation talks in June, giving his rivals in the Coordination Framework alliance the majority they needed to move forward with the process.

A court has upheld a nine-year prison term for one of Taiwan’s richest businesspeople on charges of selling tainted cooking oil. Wei Ying-chung, former chairman of Ting Hsin Oil and Fat Industrial Co., will go to prison for a third time in two cases involving adulterated oil following the ruling by Taiwan’s Supreme Court. Wei, 65, was convicted of importing lard in 2014 meant for use in animal feed from Vietnam and selling it to food manufacturers. The latest ruling left Wei with no more opportunities to appeal. Wei, along with his three brothers, ranked No. 7 last year on Forbes magazine’s list of Taiwan’s richest people with a total fortune of $6.4 billion.

Pope Francis says he can no longer travel like he used to because of his strained knee ligaments. He says his weeklong Canadian pilgrimage was “a bit of a test” that showed he has to slow down and one day possibly retire. Speaking to reporters while traveling home to the Vatican, the 85-year-old Francis stressed Saturday that he hadn’t thought about resigning but said that “the door is open” and there's nothing wrong with a pope stepping down. He said: “I think at my age and with these limitations I have to save (my energy) to be able to serve the church, or on the contrary think about the possibility of stepping aside.”

China's government says it is conducting military exercises off its coast opposite Taiwan. The show of force comes amid tension with Washington over possible plans by a top American lawmaker to visit the island democracy, which Beijing claims as part of its territory. The official Xinhua News Agency said "live-fire exercises” were being held near the Pingtan islands off Fujian province. It warned ships to avoid the area. Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the U.S. House of Representatives has yet to confirm news reports she might visit Taiwan, but President Xi Jinping warned his U.S. counterpart, Joe Biden, in a phone call Thursday against “external interference” in Beijing’s dealings with the island.

Pope Francis says the attempt to eliminate Indigenous culture in Canada through its residential school system amounted to a cultural “genocide.” Speaking to reporters while en route home from Canada on Saturday, Francis said he didn’t use the term during his trip to atone for the Catholic Church’s role in the schools because it never came to mind. Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission determined in 2015 that the forced removal of Indigenous children from their homes and placement in the residential schools to assimilate them constituted a “cultural genocide.” In the main apology of his Canada trip, Francis spoke of “cultural destruction” but didn’t use the term “cultural genocide” as some school survivors had expected.

Pope Francis crisscrossed Canada this week delivering long overdue apologies to the country’s Indigenous groups for the decades of abuses and cultural destruction they suffered at Catholic Church-run residential schools.

Elsewhere, Clayton Kershaw pitches in Colorado — his second outing since starting the All-Star Game for the National League on his home mound at Dodger Stadium. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is 11-7 with a 4.81 ERA at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

A summer camp in Poland's capital has brought Jewish volunteers originally from Russia or other parts of the former Soviet Union to mentor Ukrainian refugee children. Jewish organizations set up the camp in Warsaw to bring some joy to children traumatized by war, to help prepare them for new school year in Poland and to give their mothers some time to themselves. The organizers say the endeavor fulfilled a desire to help people in need that is both universal and central to Judaism. A Russian-born rabbi who lives in California and worked with small children at the camp says the suffering Jews endured for centuries creates an obligation to help those suffering now.

Public health officials warn that moves by rich countries to buy large quantities of monkeypox vaccine could leave millions of people in Africa unprotected against a more dangerous version of the disease. Scientists say that  and risk continued spillovers of the virus into humans unlike the campaigns to stop COVID-19, mass vaccination won’t be necessary to curb monkeypox outbreaks. They think targeted vaccination, along with other measures, could be enough to shut down the multiple outbreaks. Monkeypox is much harder to spread than the coronavirus. But experts warn that if the disease spills over into general populations, the need for vaccines could intensify, especially if it becomes entrenched in new regions.

The U.N. Security Council has voted to relax the arms embargo against the Central African Republic, a disappointment to its government, which sought a complete lifting of the ban on the sale or transfer of weapons and ammunition. The vote was 10-0 with Russia, China and the council’s three African members that supported a lifting of the embargo abstaining. CAR's Foreign Minister Sylvie Baïpo-Temon said the government welcomed the first step toward an arms embargo on armed groups. She welcomed the end to limits on some categories of weapons for government forces, but stressed “this embargo is no longer justified.”
