Burckhardt Compression's Laby labyrinth piston compressor will become part of the largest monoethylene glycol (MEG) plant in the United States.

The company said it will provide compressors as part of the recovery compressor system, which includes an electric motor drive, a skid-mounted oil system, and a skid-mounted water console with a separate air-cooled heat exchanger.

The MEG plant is located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and is part of a larger project that requires an ethane cracker. Laby compressors can provide 17,747 lb./hr (8050 kg/h) of process gas at a pressure of 305 psi (21 bar) and are designed to compress dry, dirty or worn gas. It also uses a labyrinth sealing system on its piston and piston rod glands to achieve oil-free and contact-free compression.

Monoethylene glycol is a key component of industrial and consumer products such as textiles, fibers, paper, adhesives and antifreeze. The MEG plant will start production in 2019, with an annual production capacity of 700,000 tons (635,029 tons).
