Old Ithaca drove 18 miles by mistake on Rt. 17

On October 25, an 86-year-old driver with Alzheimer's apparently drove nearly 20 miles in the wrong way on Route 17, and then an Ithaca on the Southern Highway in Delaware and Sullivan County The man and the other motorists were fine.

At 3 am, the authorities of the Delaware County 911 call center received more than 30 calls about a retrograde driver in the deposit area.

New York State Police said the caller could not describe the vehicle in detail, and the police could not find the driver.

The 911 centers in Delaware and Sullivan counties began receiving more calls from eastbound vehicles on the westbound lane of Highway 17 west of Exit 92 in the East Branch area around 6:14 in the morning.

The state police from Liberty Camp finally found and stopped the man near Exit 94.

The police said the man drove at least 18 miles in the opposite lane.

Investigators said the 86-year-old did not go home on Sunday night. Just before the police began to receive calls from retrograde drivers in Delaware County, his wife reported his disappearance to the Ithaca Police Department.

Authorities said the driver was confused and his wife reported that he had dementia.

He was sent to Garnet Health Medical Center-Catskills for evaluation.

The soldiers said that there were no reports of crashes due to prolonged accidents.
