Petrolifera Italo Rumena (PIR), Edison and Enagás have announced the start of operations of a small LNG terminal in Ravenna, which will supply LNG for road transportation and shipping.

According to the European Alternative Fuels Directive that encourages the use of liquefied natural gas in heavy transportation, Italy has committed to cover 50% of maritime transport and 30% of road transport with liquefied natural gas by 2030. To achieve this goal, the supply infrastructure will be created along the trans-European transport network TEN-T. Ravenna is the first port to create an LNG infrastructure.

The terminal has an investment of about 100 million euros, a LNG storage capacity of 20,000 cubic meters (cbm), and an annual production capacity of liquefied gas exceeding 1 million cubic meters. This is a sufficient amount of LNG to supply at least 12,000 trucks and as many as 48 ferries. During its entire service life (estimated to be 25 years), the terminal will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 6 million tons.

Nicola Monti, CEO of Edison, commented: “We are proud to announce the completion of our country’s new strategic infrastructure in line with our strategy to address climate change. “Liquefied natural gas plays an important role in the energy transition because it This allows us to immediately start decarbonizing marine transportation and heavy transportation, where other solutions and technologies cannot be implemented on a large scale except in the long run. "

The terminal has been supplied by the Enagás regasification plant in Barcelona. Depositi Italiani GNL will operate the terminal and Edison will use Ravenna Knutsen to supply the terminal, a 30,000 cubic meter natural gas tanker built by the Norwegian shipyard Knutsen OAS Shipping at Hyundai Heavy Industries Shipyard in Mipo, South Korea.
