CF Industries plans to invest $198.5 million to build a CO2 compression and dehydration unit at its Ascension Parish plant to reduce carbon emissions.

The project would create 12 new direct jobs with average salaries of $100,000 per year plus benefits, a news release said.

The company estimates the project would enable up to 6,000 tons of process CO2 per day – as much as 2 million tons per year – to be captured, liquefied and transported via pipeline to a sequestration site yet to be determined, the release said. This process would enable the company to produce up to 1.7 million tons per year of blue ammonia, seen as a key clean energy source for the energy transition since its components – nitrogen and hydrogen – do not emit carbon when combusted.

“We believe that ammonia will play a critical role in accelerating the world’s transition to clean energy and that demand for blue ammonia for this purpose will grow meaningfully in the coming years,” said Tony Will, president and CEO of CF Industries Holdings, Inc.

CF Industries has been approved in the state’s Industrial Tax Exemption program has been approved, and the company is expected to participate in the Quality Jobs incentive program.

It is the second project this year announced by a Louisiana company to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In April, Cleco said it planned a $900 million investment at its power plant in Boyce.
