NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – A 56-year-old New Paltz man has been accused of robbing a gas station in the village, according to the New Paltz Police Department.

Patrick J. Gaffney was arrested Wednesday, Sept. 14, and charged with one count of robbery and two counts of burglary, all felonies, and one count of criminal possession of stolen property, a misdemeanor, police said.

On Sunday, Sept. 11 at about 7:55 a.m., police responded to a report of an armed robbery that occurred at a gas station in the village of New Paltz, police said. The station was not identified.

It was determined that the robbery had occurred about three hours earlier, police said. Several interviews were conducted, and surveillance footage was recovered from several private establishments in the area.

Gaffney was identified as a suspect and search warrants were secured for his residence and vehicle, police said.

On Wednesday, detectives executed search warrants and recovered stolen property and several pieces of evidence. Gaffney was taken into custody and brought to the New Paltz Police Department.

During his interview with police, probable cause was established to charge Gaffney with two counts of burglary from two previous incidents that were under investigation by the New Paltz Police Department’s Detective Division, police said.

Gaffney was arraigned before Town Justice James Bacon. Based upon a bail recommendation from the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office,  Gaffney was ordered held at the Ulster County Jail on $25,000 cash bail, $50,000 bond or $200,000 insured bond, police said.

He is scheduled to return to the Town of New Paltz Court on Monday, Sep. 19, for a preliminary hearing.
