NEW YORK — Weeks before Andrew Abdullah was accused of murdering a Brooklyn man in cold blood on a subway train, a criminal court judge released him without bail on charges of stealing a car.

At a court hearing April 26 — less than a month before the shooting death Sunday of Daniel Enriquez on a Q train — a Brooklyn prosecutor asked a judge to order Abdullah held on $15,000 bond on charges of possession of stolen property after he was caught driving a stolen car.

A special prosecutor says he has filed charges of sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree against former Alaska Attorney General Clyde “Ed” Sniffen. Gregg Olson says the charges were filed Friday but he did not yet have a stamped copy of the documents or a case number. A message was left for an attorney who has represented Sniffen, a longtime attorney with the Alaska Department of Law. He resigned shortly after being appointed attorney general in January 2021. The Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica last year reported that his resignation was announced as they were reporting on allegations of sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old girl three decades ago.

Gov. Doug Ducey has vetoed a bill that would require county recorders to launch an investigation anytime someone claims that a person’s voter registration is invalid. The Republican governor said Friday that the bill could allow for subjective decisions and lead to people’s voter registrations being canceled “based on fiction rather than fact.” The measure was opposed by recorders who said their offices are not designed to be investigative agencies and warned that the measure was poorly written with the potential to cause significant confusion. They said state and county prosecutors are best situated to investigate if there are concerns about fraudulent voter registrations.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts missed Friday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks to attend his daughter’s high school graduation in Southern California. Indiana led by as many as 18 points in the second half, but Los Angeles battled back and Brittney Sykes’ jumper at the free-throw line pulled the Sparks within 95-93. It was the closest Los Angeles had been since the first quarter. Robinson made two free throws with a minute left to give Indiana a two-possession lead and she added two more at 20.1. After the final whistle, the Indiana players surrounded Knox for a celebration embrace. Indiana (3-7) fired coach Marianne Stanley on Wednesday after her teams won just 14 games in a little more than two seasons.

Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani was out of the lineup Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays with back soreness, and teammate Anthony Rendon sat with a right wrist issue. Manager Joe Maddon said the reigning AL MVP was available off the bench as a pinch-hitter. Maddon also said it was likely that Ohtani would be back in the designated hitter spot for Saturday night’s game. The Japanese two-way sensation said after Thursday night’s 6-3 loss that he felt a twinge in his back after throwing a pitch during the first inning. Trainers started working on him after the third inning.

Democrat Aaron Lieberman has ended his campaign for Arizona governor. The former state lawmaker said Friday there’s no viable path to victory. Lieberman struggled to gain traction against the Democratic front-runner, Secretary of State Katie Hobbs. He says he owes it to his supporters to be honest with them about his unlikely chances of becoming governor. Lieberman founded two organizations focused on early childhood education before being elected to the Legislature in 2018. His departure from the race leaves two other major candidates seeking the Democratic nomination: Hobbs and former Nogales Mayor Marco Lopez.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says he wants to change the name of a notorious drug-producing area known as “the Golden Triangle” to “The Triangle of Good, Hard-Working People”. The remote, mountainous area in northern Mexico is where the three states of Chihuahua, Sinaloa and Durango meet. Drug cartels have long used the area to grow marijuana and opium poppies. But López Obrador said Friday during a visit to the region the name unfairly stigmatized residents. López Obrador has sometimes praised drug cartel leaders and in 2019 ordered the release of Ovidio Guzman, one of “El Chapo” Guzman’s sons, to avoid bloodshed.
