LONDON (AP) — The U.K. government formally confirmed Thursday that it's lifting a ban on fracking in England, arguing that the move will help boost the country's energy security amid Russia's war in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Liz Truss announced within days of taking office earlier this month that she would reverse a 2019 ban on hydraulic fracturing, a controversial technique used to extract oil and gas from shale rock.

Leesuel Kang scored 37 points to help South Korea rout Bosnia and Herzegovina 99-66, giving the Asian country its first win in the women’s World Cup in 12 years. South Korea (1-2), which has played in 16 consecutive World Cups — tied with the U.S. for most — hadn’t won a game since 2010. That victory was by one point over Japan. Kang hit seven 3-pointers to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. In other games, the U.S. beat China 77-63 and Belgium topped Puerto Rico 68-65.

With one of the highest incarceration rates in the country, Oklahoma has struggled for decades to properly staff its prisons. A private prison in rural east-central Oklahoma where a correctional officer was fatally stabbed by an inmate this summer is no exception. Documents obtained by The Associated Press show Davis Correctional Facility in Holdenville has been plagued with staffing shortages and prison violence. In addition to the killing of 61-year-old guard Alan Hershberger, three inmates have also been killed at the prison so far this year. A 2021 audit of the prison shows it was operating at about 70% of its contractually obligated staffing level.

A stark gender divide has emerged in debates unfolding in Republican-led states including West Virginia, Indiana and South Carolina following the U.S. Supreme Court’s June decision to end constitutional protections for abortion. As male-dominated legislatures worked to advance bans, protesters were more likely to be women. That happened even as legislators often had support of the few Republican women holding office. In all three states, lawmakers fighting against abortion bans have pointed to the gender divide. They've insisted that male counterparts shouldn’t get to dictate medical decisions for women. Ban supporters maintain that abortion affects not only women, but also children, and all of society.

Amid mounting injuries and off-field problems, at least France coach Didier Deschamps has one less thing to worry about heading into the World Cup: Aurélien Tchouaméni looks the real deal in midfield. Tchouaméni is 22 with only 13 caps but is already playing with the maturity of a seasoned international. With Paul Pogba’s place in Qatar looking in doubt, Tchouaméni’s form is most welcome for Deschamps. Pogba is recovering from a knee injury and is weighed down by an extortion probe involving his elder brother. Tchouaméni looks to further stake his claim for a starting place in Qatar when France plays Denmark in the Nations League on Sunday.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is under investigation for using a state-owned airplane to fly to political events and bring family members with her on trips. But the decision on whether to prosecute the Republican governor likely hinges on how a county prosecutor interprets an untested law that was passed by voters in 2006. State law allows the aircraft only to be used “in the conduct of state business.” But Noem attended events hosted by political organizations. State plane logs also show that Noem often had family members join her on in-state flights in 2019. It blurred the lines between official travel and attending family events, including her son’s prom and her daughter’s wedding.

Pope Francis has traveled to Assisi, the birthplace of his namesake saint to deliver an appeal aimed at young people in hopes they can help save the Earth and make the world's economy more attentive to the poor. During his brief visit Saturday to the hill town in central Italy, Francis called for “courage” in abandoning fossil fuels. He said he was pinning much hope on the young because older generations didn't know how to protect the planet and to secure peace. He addressed a gathering of some 1,000 young people, some of them young economists and others who are involved in efforts including start-ups, focused on helping the environment. The participants came from all over the world.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is traveling to the Middle East for a two-day, three-country visit aimed at striking new energy deals and forging fresh alliances amid the economic and geopolitical turmoil resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The German government has scrambled to wean Europe’s biggest economy off Russian oil, coal and gas since coming to office last December. Senior officials said bridging the gap in natural gas supplies is a particular concern and one of the reasons Scholz is heading to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar together with a high-level business delegation. The officials said Scholz will also address human rights issues when he meets Saturday with Saudi Arabia’s powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah.

King Charles III has been pictured taking up his new state duties in Buckingham Palace for the first time. The monarch is seen looking into his official red box which contains documents from the British Government and the Commonwealth. He is shown in front of a photo of his late parents, Elizabeth and Philip, before she became queen. During her own reign, Elizabeth was regularly pictured with her official red box. The image was taken in the Eighteenth Century Room at Buckingham Palace on Sept. 11.

In a match that lasted a little over three hours, Zheng and fourth-seeded Kudermetova traded huge ground shots, big serves and plenty of errors as they pushed each other to the limits. “I feel so amazing to arrive in the final,” the 19-year-old Zheng said. “Today was a really, really difficult match."

Iranian activist Masih Alinejad says the videos and messages she’s been receiving in recent days from women in Iran are showing how angry they are following a young woman’s death in police custody over a violation of the country’s strict religious dress code. The spur for this latest explosion of outrage was the death earlier this month of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The young woman was detained for allegedly wearing her hijab too loosely in violation of strictures demanding women wear the Islamic headscarves in public. She died in custody. Protests have been going on around the country for days. Alinejad would love to see more support from those in the West, as well.

Russian forces have launched new strikes on Ukrainian cities as Kremlin-orchestrated votes continue in occupied regions of Ukraine to pave the way for their annexation by Moscow. Zaporizhzhia Gov. Oleksandr Starukh said the Russians targeted infrastructure facilities in the Dnieper River city early Saturday and one of the missiles hit an apartment building, killing one person and injuring seven others. The Russian forces also struck other areas in Ukraine, causing damage to buildings and civilian infrastructure. Amid the fighting, voting continued in Russian-held areas of eastern and southern Ukraine in Kremlin-organized referendums on making them part of Russia. The votes were dismissed by Kyiv and its Western allies as a sham with no legal force.
